Chapter Twelve

The truck rumbled to life and we pulled out of the parking lot. An inner peace filled me that I’d made the right decision, despite barely knowing her. It wasn’t like I could do much worse than Bryce at this point, and I’d agreed to be his sub after only a couple of interactions with him too. The woman beside me was nothing like that smooth-talking ticking time bomb.

Wow, say that three times fast.

I smirked at my thoughts, but the smile quickly faded as I studied our surroundings. “Isn’t the grocery store in the other direction, Mistress?” I asked, trying to keep my voice as neutral as possible.

She gave a slight nod. “There’s another errand we need to do first.”

My stomach plummeted as we pulled into the driveway of house with a wrought iron privacy fence. A gate held vigil across the entrance, and Mary Anne pushed a button on the call box. After a moment, it crackled to life.

“What can I do for you?” the no-nonsense voice asked.

“It’s Mary Anne,” Mistress said as if she came here all the time.

Apparently, they did. The gate opened almost immediately, and we pulled up in the lane. The further we drove, the more my stomach churned. I knew where we were without reading the sign. She’d brought me to the women’s shelter anyway. I wanted to turn to her and cry like a three-year-old throwing a temper tantrum while yelling, “You promised!” But I held my tongue and waited, praying desperately that this didn’t turn out the way I feared.

She parked in a parking space, then offered me an encouraging smile. “Come on, then. Let’s get this over with.”

Mary Anne turned just as my shell cracked and my lip trembled. Betrayal shot through me like lightning, and I changed the tone of my prayers. Please don’t let me puke. Please don’t let me puke.

In silence, I followed her to the largest brick building in the center of the complex. Duplexes lined either side, facing inward toward the parking area, and women of various ages were outside doing everything from gardening to watching young children play. I met the gaze of one who pulled her child tightly to her as she watched us with eyes haunted by violence no human should ever endure. A chill swept down my spine as I recognized myself in her wide, wary eyes.

As we entered the building, a woman behind the plexiglass smiled at us. “Great to see you, Mary Anne.”

“Evening, Edith. Is Abbey in the clinic right now?”

Edith’s attention swept past her to evaluate me, and her eyes narrowed. “Yes, she’s back there and there’s no one with her right now. She can see to your guest. Do you want me to bring a welcome packet back?”

My new Mistress shook her head. “No. She’s just here for a checkup. She’s staying with me.”

The woman smiled brightly. “Couldn’t be in better care. Chin up, sweetie. You’re in good hands. She’s the one who helped found this place so we could even get off the ground.
